Central Texas sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the country. If you’ve owned a home in McLennan, Bell, or Hill County for more than a few years, your roof has been hit by hail damage roof in Waco — probably more than once.
The tricky part is that hail damage rarely looks like damage. There’s no hole. Nothing is hanging off. You walk outside after the storm, glance up, and everything looks normal. So you move on.
Two years later there’s a stain on the ceiling, the storm date is long past, and the conversation with your insurance carrier gets a lot harder than it needed to be.
Here’s what’s actually happening up there.
Hail Damage vs. Hail Impact
Not every hailstone that hits your roof damages it. Pea-sized hail on a three-year-old architectural shingle usually does nothing. What roofers are looking for is functional damage — damage that shortens the life of the roof system — as opposed to cosmetic marks.
Functional hail damage on asphalt shingles typically shows up as:
Bruising. A hailstone strikes hard enough to fracture the fiberglass mat inside the shingle without breaking the surface. You often can’t see it — you feel it. Press a thumb on the spot and it gives, slightly soft, like a bruise on an apple. That mat is the structural layer. Once it’s fractured, that spot is on a countdown.
Granule loss in circular patterns. Random bare spots happen with age. Hail leaves distinct round divots, roughly uniform in size, scattered across slopes — and concentrated on the slope that faced the storm.
Exposed black asphalt. Where granules got knocked clean off, the dark mat underneath is visible. UV exposure on bare asphalt accelerates deterioration fast.
Cracks radiating from an impact point. More common on older, brittle shingles.
The Soft Metal Test
This is the fastest way to confirm a hail event, and you can often do part of it from the ground. Hail dents soft metal before it visibly damages shingles, so roofers check:
- Gutters and downspouts — dimpling along the top edge and face
- Metal roof vents, turbines, and ridge vents — round dents on the caps
- Fascia and drip edge
- Your A/C condenser fins — bent, flattened sections on the coil housing, usually on one side
- Window screens and wraps
- Mailbox, grill, garage door, patio furniture
If your A/C unit and downspouts are dented, hail of a meaningful size hit your property. That establishes the event. The roof inspection then determines the extent.
Why You Genuinely Can’t See It From the Driveway
Three reasons. Bruising has no visual signature from distance. Granule loss reads as a slight change in color or texture that’s invisible at 30 feet and obvious at 3 feet. And damage concentrates on the slope facing the storm’s direction, which may be the side of the house you never look at.
This is why “my roof looks fine” is not the same as “my roof is fine.” It’s also why we do free inspections — the answer takes twenty minutes on a ladder and costs you nothing to find out.
Other Storm Damage Worth Checking
Hail rarely travels alone. While you’re looking:
- Wind creasing. Shingles lifted and folded back, then laid down again. Leaves a horizontal crease. The seal is broken even though nothing is missing.
- Missing shingles along ridges, hips, and rakes.
- Displaced or lifted flashing at chimneys and wall intersections.
- Debris impact from branches.
- Damaged pipe boots, cracked or knocked loose.
What to Do Right Now If You Suspect Hail Damage
- Write down the storm date. If you’re not sure, local weather records can pin it down. Carriers ask for it.
- Photograph everything — the roof if you can do it safely, plus the soft-metal evidence at ground level, plus any interior stains.
- Get a professional inspection before you call your insurer. Knowing whether you actually have damage — and roughly what the repair scope is — puts you in a far better position than filing blind. If there’s no meaningful damage, you’ll want to know that before opening a claim.
- Don’t wait for a leak. Policies generally require prompt notice of a loss, and most have time limits on filing. Check your specific policy, and don’t let a claim age out while you decide.
- Cover active leaks immediately. If water is coming in, that’s an emergency repair, and most policies expect you to prevent further damage.
We’ll Tell You What’s There
Montgomery Roofing has walked thousands of Central Texas roofs after hailstorms. We document what we find with photos, explain it plainly, and give you a written report you can use — whether that leads to a targeted repair, a full tear-off and replacement, or a note in the file that says the roof is fine and to check back in two years.
We’ve also sat alongside a lot of homeowners through the claims process, and we’re happy to explain how it typically works.
